Mastering the Business of Sports
SportsBiz Africa Masterclasses with You, For You
One of the biggest misconceptions by people unfamiliar with business and employment opportunities in the sports industry is that it only pays for professional athletes or tennis and soccer stars. Others think it is a closed and difficult industry to break into.
“The true value of sports, or the money in sports, is not on professional sports,” observes Will Mbiakop, the Executive Chairman of the research organisation African Sports and Creative Institute (ASCI). “The backbone of the sports industry in the world is the daily consumption and practice of sports by the household,” he explained at the 2024 SportsBiz Africa Forum in Kigali.
By the household, he means the people that sports entertain, whether at home or at venues such as stadiums or basketball courts. In addition to the star athletes and players who entertain the spectators, the sports events and venues require managers, marketers, and businesses that produce and sell sports apparel (clothing and garments) and equipment. All these are opportunities to start a venture or gain employment.
To grow and thrive, sports also require new ideas, as thought out by sports technology and other startups. Their innovations and other happenings in the sector are in turn made known through sports media and content creators, further offering opportunities for investment and job creation.
All these put together drive the sports economy, which in 2024 was valued at over US$500 billion globally. In Africa, it is valued at between US$12–15 billion annually. The market potential is therefore huge and is quickly growing to cater to an increasing middle class with cash to spend.
South Africa leads in the continent with industry estimated to be worth between US$2-3 billion annually, followed by Nigeria at between US$1-1.5 billion and Egypt at between US$1-1.2 billion. The sports economies in most of the other Africa countries are valued much less and lack adequate professional and other personnel capacity in most sectors of the sports industry.
There are various efforts continent-wide to help fill the gap, including by SportsBiz Africa through its increasingly sought-after Masterclasses. The Masterclasses are designed to enhance or equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for both starting and running a sports-related business, and for securing employment or enhancing personnel competence in the industry.
The Masterclasses for the year 2025 will mainly target aspiring sports entrepreneurs and young professionals seeking management roles in the sector and will include individuals seeking to transition into the industry as well as students and recent graduates.
The Masterclasses are conducted in collaboration by the internationally renowned and Spain-based Johan Cruyff Institute. The classes are led by seasoned professionals and industry experts and provide practical insights with real-world examples and actionable strategies.
